Helical Staircase FAQ: Drawings, Shop Pre-assembly and Delivery
These are the questions architects, designers and contractors ask us most often before ordering a helical staircase. We have fabricated steelwork in our own Dongguan factory for over 20 years, and staircases have always been a core part of the work. If your question is not here, send us your drawings and ask.
What is the difference between a spiral and a helical staircase?
A spiral staircase winds around a central column that carries the treads. A helical staircase has no centre column: curved inner and outer stringers carry the treads and the middle stays open. Helical stairs need a larger footprint and more fabrication work, but read as lighter in the space. More in spiral vs helical staircase.
What drawings do you need for a quotation?
Architectural drawings or a concept design are enough to start, with floor-to-floor height and the slab opening. A rendering or reference photo also helps. Before fabrication we prepare shop drawings for your approval.
Which materials and sections do you use?
Stringers are made in plate steel or I-sections, bent and twisted to shape. Typical finishes around the steelwork are stainless-steel handrails, glass balustrades and timber-clad treads. Steel grades follow the project specification.
Do you carry out full shop pre-assembly?
Yes. After fabrication the staircase is fully pre-assembled in our Dongguan factory so we can check the curves, riser heights and joints between sections before it leaves.
How is the staircase delivered?
After pre-assembly the stair is match-marked and dismantled into sections sized for transport and access to the building. Each section receives its surface treatment and the sections are delivered to site.
What surface treatment is available?
Surface treatment is specified per project, for example blast cleaning and protective coating. Tell us the finish on your specification and we will confirm how we handle it.
